We are saddened by recent events which led to the cancellation of the 2017 TRI for Good. We know many of you have questions regarding these events and we want now to briefly explain our decision.
When we started this event three years ago, we did so with a single goal: raise money to assist families fighting pediatric cancer. Everyone involved in this endeavor does so on a voluntary basis and 100% of proceeds go directly to the designated charities. We are heartbroken we cannot support this event, however, our commitment to these charities is ongoing.
In 2015, when we held our first triathlon, we christened it the TRI at the Trump in recognition of its location and the generous donation of the Trump National Golf Course facility in Mooresville. However, this year, for a variety of reasons – most notably our desire to hold similar events in other locations – we believed it appropriate to change the name to TRI for Good. We wanted the name to support the cause rather than the location.
Unfortunately, our announcement of the name change led to dissension within our community and among our supporters. We believe this dissension is attributable to false rumors and unfounded accusations regarding our motives. We never intended the name change to be a political statement. TRI for Good has always been about children, never about politics. Never. It would have been wrong to allow it to be transformed into anything other than good work for people who need help.
We recently learned of threats being made to disrupt the event. After much careful deliberation and in consultation with our sponsors and other supporters, we made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s TRI for Good. We must ensure the safety of our community, our athletes, and our spectators.
TRI for Good will return. We are not deterred from our commitment to children or to the Isabella Santos Foundation and Novant Hemby Children’s Hospital. The children drive our passion and that passion is undimmed.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
